Tim and Kim Buckland are well known faces in White River and the Lowveld and they are synonymous with the Sabie Valley Coffee brand. The passion that they have for their business and their love for coffee can be seen in their lively demeanour and friendly customer service. There’s always a smile to be found at their coffee shop at Casterbridge albeit from Tim or Kim or one of their staff members like Florence who’s been with them for years!
Sabie Valley Coffee started more than 30 years ago and is very much the story of the Buckland family. Tim Buckland planted his first coffee trees (10 hectares) in 1980 in Hazyview on the majestic Sabie valley slopes. Kim joined him later as they started their married life and their passion and dedication to the business grew as did their family. They soon realised that selling green coffee was not going to be enough to build a sustainable business. Tim then built a coffee roaster from scratch that is used to this day! They perfected their own roasting technique and so the Sabie Valley Coffee brand was born.
They opened a coffee shop on the farm and Kim’s chocolate cake soon became legendary. With time they developed a technique of roasting, which maximises the essence of the humble coffee bean. As people’s preferences vary, they have perfected a method of roasting to manipulate the aromatic flavours – offering four roasts, varying from subtle to strong to suit all palates.
The four roasts are:
Medium roast – Subtle, smooth and well-rounded with a delicate flavour and aroma
Bushveld blend – Distinctive, smooth and balanced embracing lively body and acidity
Dark roast – A strong, rich coffee with an intense flavour
Espresso – Very strong and distinct, an explosion of flavour
The Bucklands produce seedlings and sell them as ornamental trees to visitors. The gift shop at Casterbridge offers an interesting array of all things coffee including biscuits, “green” coffee cups, biscuits and more. A range of coffee dispensing equipment and accessories – from domestic to industrial are also available. In-house barista training is available from the friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Tim’s interesting coffee tours are very popular and he takes you through the whole process from bean to cup. Tim and Kim haven’t missed a tour in 25 years! These tours can be arranged by appointment.
Kim’s delicious chocolate cake is still on offer as is quiche, carrot cake, pies, salad and more! And yes, they also have a range of teas available for the non-coffee drinkers.
