Last week saw the opening of the Japhet Outreach Center at Uplands School. Nicolette de Bruyn and her team at Uplands Outreach can be proud of what they have already achieved and continue to do.
Uplands Outreach is an educational non-profit organisation that operates in the rural Insikazi school circuit in Mpumalanga. They were established in 1994 by Uplands in order to boost educational standards in rural Mpumalanga. They do this by partnering with schools and using the expertise, facilities and culture of excellence of Uplands.
The new outreach centre was created with the support of many local people and particularly the Japhet family, who have done so much good work for Uplands and the local community. It is a beautiful centre, set amongst tall trees on the Uplands property and you could hear the excitement in Violah Moya’s voice as she talked about it. Violah is the Operations Manager at Uplands outreach.

The opening was a fun event, with the Uplands community enthusiastically celebrating Outreach’s achievements. So what are those achievements? Well they are really quite impressive:
In 2018:
- The pass rate of the 10 secondary schools in Insikazi was 80.6%, higher than the national and provincial averages.
- 3 of the top 10 Mpumalanga matric students came from these schools
- Phumlani Khumalo from Zikodze Secondary School has been accepted for medicine at WITS university, having achieved 100% for Physical Science and 96% for Maths)
- 10 of Outreach’s “Learners for Excellence” students graduated from University last year.
There are many other remarkable improvements across school performance, teacher performance and student performance.
We wish this dynamic team a successful 2019 and celebrate this fine example of White River excellence!
