These pictures say it all – what a beautiful day and place to cycle along with 33 000 of one’s closest friends! The stunning scenery and perfect weather helped deal with burning muscles and the longing for a large cold one. (Actually the knowledge that there was a large cold one waiting at the finish, care of some White Riverians of course, kept one going at a steady pace.)
Much of the group supporting the Masoyi Day Care centre started together – except those who had earned an earlier start, but soon we split up as we went our different paces. No matter as there is plenty of company in the form of jovial fellow riders and the supporters on the side of the road. Two things never cease to amaze: the brilliant organising of this huge event and the tireless support of locals, who keep you amused and motivated and make you feel as if you are the only rider struggling up that hill.
This was my 4th tour – a spring chicken compared to some – and people ask me why I am crazy enough to do it even once. I’ll keep going back for:
-the inspiration from being with all those people of many shapes, sizes and nationalities, just having a go.
-the awe of the beauty of our country
-testing myself through 109 kms and 1200m total climb, which is somehow also a quiet meditative experience in the middle of the crowd
-the support of the locals and the impressive organising as mentioned above
I highly recommend this experience!
A couple of choice comments on the tour:
Rounding a corner after trundling up part of Chapman’s Peak, everyone looked up to see hundreds of cyclists way above us disappearing over what some think is the top (nope not yet!). At this point you heard groans aplenty and a voice next to me said simply “Hmmph, dis lekker!”
Later near the top of the infamous Suikerbossie: “Meneer, is hierdie Suikerbossie nou klaar?!”
Our little town is so well represented it would be great to get an idea of how many Slowvelders take part. Well done to the Masoyi team and especially Veronica Rorich for organising us!
Look out for the We Are White River cycling shirts coming soon!
I am now finish en klaar of my saddle for a few days – but watch this space for the next challenge: 9 days cycling over a few mountains.
