Maria Scholtz: “We aim to lead the fight against cancer in South Africa. We are the watchdog for our citizens in this fight.”
CANSA raises funds to enable research, educate the public and provide support to everyone touched by cancer.
Age, race, gender, education, nationality, income level – cancer doesn’t discriminate on any grounds, it strikes across the full spectrum of humanity and you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone who hasn’t been affected by the disease in some way.
CANSA’s focused awareness campaigns aim to promote health and reduce the risk of cancer by:
-Keeping safe in the sun with their SunSmart Programme
-Endorse leading a balanced lifestyle
-Promoting anti-tobacco and new regulations against smoking
-Encouraging women’s and men’s Health and that of the youth and children
-Reducing cancer-causing risk factors in the environment.
The CANSA Seal of Recognition, (CANSA Smart Choice and CANSA SunSmart) encourages South Africans to read product labels and to assist them to make informed choices, aimed at promoting a smart, healthy and balanced lifestyle. It also helps consumers identify products free of toxins, carcinogens, hormones and/or endocrine disruptors.
CANSA offers health awareness materials and cancer fact sheets, as well as screening at CANSA Care Centres. They offer clinical breast examinations, Pap smear screening tests for cervical cancer, Health Style Risk Assessments and Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests for men to detect prostate abnormalities.
The CANSA Care Clinic in Nelspruit offers a wig and breast prosthesis bank, medical loan equipment and Stoma Clinic.
The word ‘Cancer’ is a frightening one, but with the support and information available from CANSA, patients and their families are not alone.
