Set in green peaceful grounds adjacent to Waterberry Estate, the Calvary Assembly of God has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and this is reflected in the cheerful and enthusiastic youth pastor, Emmerentia Spies.
We are surprised to learn that this church is 20 years old although it hasn’t always been at this address. Its 300 members support a range of good work, serving various communities. There are missionaries in far flung places, including Turkey and India. However, as Emmerentia says, charity really should begin at home, and so the church is very active in the local community.
Amongst others they support Huis Betlehem and Huis Jakaranda and also the African School of Missions, Mercy.
Emmerentia brings an important focus on the youth. She has a strong sense of care for the young people in and around White River. There are several youth initiatives on the go, and the church aims to provide activities that can act as alternatives to some of the harmful things that young people are getting involved with.
Their youth ministry is called “Glow”, which highlights the imperative to “let your light shine”
They encourage the young people to do some thinking outside their comfort zones and to do some community work – it’s not just having fun!
A veggie garden on the church’s lovely green premises serves as an important activity for the children.
The church is not one to keep its pleasant spot to itself and is opening up a coffee shop on the veranda overlooking the garden. All will be welcome and we can attest to it being a good spot to relax, either with your children playing on the lawn or for a quick meeting.
In addition, they have an open-air cinema where the lawn is landscaped into almost an amphitheatre shape. A variety of films will be shown and food served. Dates for these and other events can be found on their useful calendar at http://www.calvarywr.co.za/events_upcoming.html
