Anton Bosch: “I get up and go to work like any regular job.”
Transfixed by Anton’s beautiful pieces hanging all around the studio, gallery and home he and Hanlie share, ‘regular’ isn’t a word that comes to mind. He’s a potter with a strong graphic element, encompassing painting into 3D ceramic works and the results are breathtaking.
Born in Pretoria, son of renowned ceramist and artist Esias Bosch, Anton grew up in the Lowveld and through his father met many famous artists, such as English Potters the late Ray Finch and his son Joe with whom Anton used to play cricket.

He went back to his birthplace, Pretoria, to study Fine Arts at the Technikon with majors in Painting and Drawing. Anton himself wasn’t too sure of the artistic direction he wanted to take, although his father, knowing full well the physical toll of ceramics, encouraged him to paint. The formal Art school training shines through his work with his eye for design and graphics, but Anton describes his art as being a series of small breakthroughs and plenty of discipline.
Anton and Hanlie met at Art School and returned to Esias’s studio in White River from where they began working and developing their individual styles until about 10 years ago they built their current studio and gallery adjacent to their home in St George Street.

Meanwhile Anton was busy developing his own tile technique, basically a fusion of layers of clay melting into ceramic through four or five firings. He paints and potters and is busy all the time – Anton is incredibly prolific. Although he is inspired by many of the painting masters and his ceramicist father, Anton is particularly drawn to Pablo Picasso, a man Anton considers a master craftsman and who he admires for the high-volume of work he produced throughout his life.

Anton’s work has been exhibited extensively in South Africa – the Vineyard Hotel in Cape Town displays many pieces of his work and he works on commissions from all over the world. Anton and Hanlie have a permanent display at Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre and the Bosch Studio welcomes visitors to the Gallery which is open weekdays 9am – 4pm, Saturdays 9am – 1pm and after hours by appointment.
