Sue Butowsky: “We all crave a bit of real with a good cappuccino and a smile from a real person.”
Zannas could be called a White River institution, it’s hugely popular and well known, but how many of their regular patrons know that Zannas is part of owner Sue’s full name?
Situated in the Bagdad Centre just off the R40, this coffee shop cum deli cum bakery cum almost everything foodie place hums along to Sue’s motto about her offering – it’s fresh, consistent, local and driven by passion.
Sue trained as a chef in London, which probably explains her dynamic compulsion to be on trend with food fashion. Being a coffee aficionados, she was driven to introduce a decently brewed bean to White River but somehow, as her customers matured, her dream deli evolved and expanded into one of the best places for breakfast in town, a sit down place where business deals are made, sporty locals and visitors rest their weary legs and mothers wipe the post-school drop-off glow from their brow, all over a cup of Bean There coffee and a bite from the varied and extensive menu. Juices are freshly squeezed, smoothies ice and additive free and the fragrant biscuits baked daily on site.
Zannas is a daily stop for many of their clients, the staff warmly welcome customers by name and know their regular orders. The walk in freezer and groaning shelves stock ingredients used by the Zannas kitchen, so if you like what you are eating, you can purchase the wherewithal to DIY at home. Or you could just pick up a prepared meal from their freezer and save the hassle!
Energy bunny Sue is co-founder and organiser of the monthly Bagdad Farmers Market held every 2nd Saturday at the Bagdad Centre, and she’s truly grateful to the other tenants who’ve jumped in boots and all to help and be involved in this popular White River event. Zannas has a regular stall at the market selling butter, buttermilk, rusks, ranch dressings and cheese amongst other popular Zannas goodies, so do stop at their al fresco market display and pick up your favourites. White Riverians have lapped up the new products and suppliers introduced to them by the market, so Zannas stocks a lot of the Bagdad Market produce between the market days. Items are available consistently throughout the month and the producer has a permanent outlet.
