After two decades of working with a wide range of people in organisations across the globe – and helping those organisations work better – we had an idea for building a community around promoting excellence and positivity in a small town in rural South Africa.
This town had the potential of a good story, but wasn’t telling it together. So we started a small community project called “We Are White River”. We created space and a platform and it caught the imagination of local people, who joined in.
At first we weren’t too sure where this was going, but we learnt about people in community and the power of engaging community. We have a passion for connection between people, real community based on working together and actually doing things positively.
This community organisation is still going strong and is expanding to other towns in SA as well.
We fell into social media and learned what does and doesn’t work. We became a small business almost by accident.
From consulting work, community action and our social media experiences these things stood out:
No publicity, advertising in print or social media is of any value unless it is an authentic story of your business.
Social media is a powerful and cost-effective channel to connect with people and to do this effectively it needs to understand people and be about people – not about selling. Social media is like word-of-mouth on steroids.
It is about telling stories that capture the interest of potential markets, markets that should be viewed as communities.
The human side of the business – your personal brand – is essential to effective social media. The people in your business and the loyal followers of your story – your customers – are a vital part of sharing your story, growing followers and influencing new customers.
Out of this has grown a model of connecting businesses to communities through authentic stories, supported by business realities and shared effectively on social media.
We don’t take on business where there is no chance of a good story.
