Frank Theron: “I have a passion for it and besides, it’s great fun to sit and watch the product make itself!”
Originally from Cape Town, Frank Theron has wine running through his veins. Looking ahead towards impending early retirement and encouraged by his friends he bought the old Rottcher Wineries business in 2012 and set about turning a passion into a future.
Frank returned to Cape Town to attend a beginners distilling course at the prestigious Jorgensen Distilleries and the distilling bug bit him deeply. He bought his first still and signed up for the advanced course.
New brooms sweep clean and Frank has rung many changes at the decades old Rottcher Wineries. Re-equipping the winery and setting up the distillery was just the beginning. A new website, Facebook page, rebranding and packaging introduced a new look to the well-known brand. And well-known it is, his visitors book is filled with comments from travellers who’ve been visiting Rottcher for years to buy Avalencia Orange and Ginger wines, the stop off to taste and purchase being a tradition on their Lowveld visits.
The next step was to put something new and exciting inside the sleek, elegant new bottles and Limoncello was born. This product is fast making its way to being his bestseller and after Frank introduced his Limoncello Slush Puppy at the monthly Bagdad Farmers Market, a whole new fan base was procured.
No country town would be complete without its mampoer and Frank has just produced his first – Clementine Mampoer. It packs a punch but judging by the glee on the faces of the samplers, it has the right kick.
Energy bunny Frank overflows with new ideas, amongst them offering tastings for product launches and including tastings and tours of Rottcher to White River travel packages.
The new Rottcher Wineries packs a fresh, sparkling new punch to White River activities but more than that, Frank’s products are darn good and not to be missed by either visitors or locals.
