Di Johnstone: “We’re keeping the happy, light vibe that the clients love while working on a fresh new look for the studio.”
Thirteen years after opening her studio doors, Jane Trollip has handed the reins over to Des Baird and Di Johnstone, both of whom were trained by her and have absorbed her philosophy of helping people to know their own strengths and assisting them to facilitate their wellbeing. Des and Di are qualified Tri-Focus Pilates Instructors although through their training with Jane they are well versed in Stott Pilates through.
Pilates is about core strengthening, which helps to re-adjust pain-causing postural imbalances. Achieving postural balance alleviates knee, back, neck and shoulder aches and pains, a great relief to anyone suffering chronic pain.
Our bodies weren’t designed to slump over computers, desks and steering wheels, nor to slouch in front of a television, watching sport instead of being active ourselves. It’s little wonder then that eventually joints and muscles, incorrectly overworked, put up their hands and surrender, allowing a build-up of poor bio mechanics to painfully collapse.
Pilates@Casterbridge offers broad based Pilates, ranging from rehabilitation to advanced athletic conditioning. They have the full spectrum of Pilates equipment, specially designed for rehabilitation after spinal surgery, knee replacements, hip replacements and other orthopaedic surgeries from shoulder to foot.
In addition to both private, semi-private and group classes on the mats, using the ballet barre, balls and discs of all sizes, barrels, the dreaded foam rollers and the springs, Pilates @ Casterbridge have a range of equipment for private sessions – the cadillac, two reformers, a stability chair and a ladder barrel. There is plenty here to stretch, tone and build strength!
They are able to assist athletes and sports enthusiasts with their cross training needs, assisting them to remain injury free. Any men thinking that Pilates is for women should try a session – Pilates may look gentle but as proponents gain strength and go up through the levels, their core strength matches that of top sportsmen!
Des began her Pilates career in 2009, and chose Pilates over gym or other exercise regimes simply because it offers more control and mindful movements of the body. Pilates flows, building flexibility and strength together with long, lean muscles. She’s always loved any form of exercise but Pilates was an eye opener for her – no matter how physically strong you feel, attempting some of the most basic Pilates moves can be a humbling experience. You have to be able to instruct the body to move, calling on specific muscles to fire and working outward from you ‘powerhouse’. Helping people achieve this has become Des’s personal goal.
Pilates for Di started nine years ago in Nelspruit. Wanting to take it to the next level, she approached Jane for instructor training. Di loves all the benefits that Pilates gives the body, without injury. She’s an energy bunny, though, and has introduced High Intensity Interval Training to the studio, which despite some misgivings, the clients are enjoying as the post class endorphins shoot through their bodies.
Jane Trollip has attained advanced comprehensive certification through Stott at distinction level, and has been teaching since 2004. She continues to handle rehabilitation clients for the studio.
Des and Di have stepped up to the community plate as well – three times a week they teach group Pilates at White River Manor Rehabilitation Centre. Pilates@Casterbridge offers group classes, semi and private sessions and all new clients are assessed for any problems before they begin exercising. The ladies are determined to retain the integrity and focus on mindful exercise that the studio is known for, and with clients who have been training there for over 10 years, that’s reassuring to know.
