Kathy’s motto is thrive through change. “Change is inevitable, but where there is movement, there is hope and resourcefulness.”
“We all go through change – sometimes it can derail us, but with the right approach, it can be the start of a great new direction. Whether it be finding/starting/changing jobs, preparing to get married, to retire, dealing with loss or conflict, building a team or becoming a mother – change can take many forms. I help people take the time and space to really think through the change, not just to survive it, but to thrive through it.”
Kathy Knott is a born and bred Lowvelder who recently returned to her home town of White River and opened a practice called PIVOT Psychology at Macadamia Medical and Health Centre. She is a qualified Counselling Psychologist and has been registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), since 1999.
Kathy works with individuals, adolescents, couples and teams. She uses a “narrative” approach with her clients where story telling is used to gain a better understanding of one’s life. One technique is called ‘My life story’ where one gives names to the chapters in your book of life. What will the current chapter be called and what are the chapters that are not yet written? In conceptualising, narrating and sometimes writing one’s story, people come to a better understanding of their lives and the journey that they are on.
This approach gels with some of the recent thinking expressed in We are White River blogs. We have talked about the stories one holds about one’s own life, and also the “single stories” we hold and spread about others, both of which can serve to keep us stuck as individuals and as a community.
After meeting and chatting with Kathy it is clear that she has the counselling skills and experience, but also the warmth of personality, to be effective as a therapist.
“Embarking on a journey of discovery in therapy takes courage and a willingness to work hard to be able to lead one’s best life. It is an opportunity where you come with all that you know about yourself and we create a safe space together. I will come with all I know and together we unpack the issues at hand in order to gain some perspective, insights, solutions or relief.”
Career development and life transitions can be a source of stress to many, and so one of Kathy’s passions is career pathing. She focuses on every step of the journey from subject choices and school leaving, to studying and deciding on what to do after graduation. Preparing for the world of work as well as mid-career transitions are also key issues. For example, a big life change that many underestimate, is the transition from full employment to retirement. Kathy helps people see that it is a career change, like any other, and is another opportunity to create an updated identity, staying active and engaged in their golden years.
One of Kathy’s biggest dreams is being there for the community and being seen as a person where people can go to for help. She loves giving value back to people and helping them to lead their most meaningful lives.
Kathy is very happy to be back in White River and she is already connecting with others who are doing good work. We think she’ll be a real asset to our community!
