Steve Cullen and his wife Laura moved to the White River Country Estate in January 2008 with their daughters Victoria and Jamie-Lee. They fell in love with the lifestyle, saying it’s a wonderful and natural environment in which to raise their family. And of course, for a golfer, having a golf course right in front of his house was the epitome of every avid golfer’s dream!
Steve took some time off from the greens to give golfers a valuable synopsis of the best courses nearby.
There are a number of golf courses in the Lowveld, all of which offer their own pleasures and attractions, but Steve admits he’s biased towards White River Country Club. The attractive course is constantly improving, thanks to the good working relationship with the WRCE homeowners and a young, dynamic and friendly management team. Their vision is to get White River Country Club into the top 100 courses in South Africa, a vision which will make the Lowveld, and White River, a premier golf destination in South Africa.
Nelspruit Golf Club (NGC) can justifiably be regarded as the top and best known golf club in the region. Nelspruit is the business hub of the Lowveld and the golf club attracts many of the local business owners to the club. The course itself is both challenging and fun to play, and the club indisputably has the best greens in the Lowveld. The view from the club’s main veranda is amazing and you can enjoy a few beers with the very friendly members!
Leopard Creek in Malelane is one of the Top 10 courses in SA. Its exclusivity, however, means it’s fairly expensive to play there. All the same, if you do get the opportunity to play it’s worth every cent as the course is truly world class.
Other golf courses in the Lowveld are Sabie River Bungalows, Sabie Town and Kruger Park Lodge. Pilgrims Rest is a 9 hole course with 18 separate tees, an enjoyable experience. You also cannot miss out on playing at Skukuza in the Kruger National Park. Just be careful of the crocodiles!!
All the above courses are really pleasant golfing experiences.
Although Steve has been playing golf for nearly 50 years, he reckons he probably has more passion for the game than when he was 16. It’s the most challenging, infuriating, frustrating, rewarding and enjoyable sport that he’s ever participated in. He says that golf has taught him so much about himself, both good and bad, and the sport has enabled him to meet and make wonderful friends while visiting some of the most beautiful places in the world.
Playing golf also proved to be a great asset since he moved here, enabling him to build up a fantastic business network. Last but not least, he really enjoys playing golf in the Lowveld.
If you need to buy golf equipment, Steve suggests visiting the Nelspruit Pro Shop and Steve Lawrence at the NGC. Gavin from the Pro Shop and Steve from NGC will give you expert advice.
