Cinema ˈsinne-ma’: noun – a theatre where films are shown for public entertainment. But White River’s Casterbridge Cinema means so much more than that to the town.
Privately owned by Sue Butowsky, the quaint and charming little theatre seats 96. Where else in South Africa can patrons stroll in, armed with a bottle of wine nestling in an ice bucket and settle themselves down whilst keeping an eye out for the pizza delivery to arrive at their seat?
Sue is a creative businesswoman and since adopting the cinema a few years ago, she’s redefined what a cinema is. Not being tied into a distribution network, they are able to screen a discerning selection of films and hold mini festivals as they choose. They host Movie Dine nights where your catered meal is delivered to your seat as you watch and the cinema is available for private hire at reasonable rates with the option of catering as well.
“Art Nouveau Wednesdays” are where they have fun and kick over the traces. Sue selects two movies each month which they screen on Wednesdays for the discerning White River cinema goer looking for something Art House rather than mainstream. Art Nouveau Wednesdays enable Casterbridge Cinema to offer two extra movies a month.
The cinema now also offers kiddies parties and is also ideal for corporate and private functions.
Our dear little cinema is a beloved landmark for entertainment in White River and long may the velvet curtains draw back with a swish!
